This is one of the first paintings I did on paper this size. It was a neater, more refined style that I really love. I was painting in a really bright open sunny space that I think really turned up on the paper in the colours. One of my favourite artists is Yayoi Kusama and I first saw one of her 'Narcissus Garden' works in the Yokohama Triennale in 2001. This work had mirrored floors, walls and ceilings and it was filled with mirrored balls so when you were in there your reflection was just everywhere, like you were in a million pieces. And the feeling is hard to describe, but it blew my tiny little mind. Kusama often talks about 'obliteration' in her works which I can relate to but maybe for me it is about disappearing into the action of painting such repetition. Stopping your mind from thinking about all the things, and just focusing on what you are doing in front of you. And maybe that's what she means but I just love randomly painting and slowly creating something out of nothing. I love the feeling that the colours and the sparkling light create and I love just endlessly looking. There is just so much to see in the world. It is infinite and small pieces together make up something so much more. So many layers of detail in the universe, the world, inside of you.
